The Magic of Mexico

I traveled to Mexico yesterday afternoon.  Brought along a dear girlfriend of mine.  It was delightful.

Cirque du Soleil has brought one of their newest creations to Marymoor Park in Redmond, WA.  Cirque’s website invites you to “Discover LUZIA, where a waking dream transports you to an imaginary Mexico. Experience a wondrous world that inspires you to explore your senses, enveloped in light and nurtured by rain.”

In a word?  Magical.

This is my…fifth (I think) Cirque show.  The first was Mystere, seen at Treasure Island in Las Vegas.  I was captivated.  The color, the music, the sheer human strength, talent, beauty.

Since then, the I’ve seen four additional shows:  one at the Tacoma Dome and three at the Grand Chapiteau on Marymoor Park.

What is a Grand Chapiteau?  A huge tent.  The contains a world of magic.

The last show the husband and I saw, Kurios, was good…but I left thinking that maybe I had over-Cirque’d.  It just didn’t draw me in like some of the prior shows I had seen.  So, I approached Luzia with a few reservations.  Maybe the acrobatics were getting too familiar…the music not as special as it once was.  Ha!  Luzia grabbed me by the tongue (my mouth was hanging open for most of the show), dazzled my eyes and filled my ears with amazing music.

There was an industrial conveyer belt upon which people jumped and tumbled and ran.  A life-sized horse galloping behind a butterfly, a jaguar playing in a pool while a Tarzan-esque man twists and turns above him.  Hummingbirds flitted around the stage, women spun in huge wooden rings and water fell from the sky in a dazzling display of shapes and patterns.

My love has been restored.
